Spousal and Child Support
According to the laws of Alaska, parents are required to support their children until 18 years of age. Courts calculate child support (which is financial assistance paid by the non-custodial parent to the primary custodian) based on a percentage of the net income of the non-custodial parent. The following proportions are used to calculate the average amount of support:
- One child - 20% of the income.
- Two children - 27% of the income.
- Three children in a family - 33% of the income.
- More than three children in a family - an additional 3% is charged for each child.
If a child spends long holidays or other significant periods of time with the parent who does not have primary custodian rights, then this parent can reduce the amount of financial support by 75%. In such a case, the time spent with the child must be at least 27 days.
